Trying Something New

What is something that you have always wanted to do?

Was it travel, learn to crochet, sing, draw, dance, or was it something else? Maybe it is something that people might think of as a bit weird or ‘woowoo’?

Let me tell you about my ‘woowoo’ experience. I tried something new when I decided to take my first Reiki class after seeing one Reiki Master for close to 2 years.

What is Reiki? (pronounced ray-key)

It is an energy-based healing modality involving the laying on hands with a light touch or with hands hovering about the body, It is of Japanese origin and is used for stress and pain reduction.

Breaking the word Reiki down into parts, Rei, means universal, meaning it is everywhere, and kei, meaning life force energy that all living things have.

Reiki is not dependent on a religious belief. It is a holistic approach to self-healing that heals body, mind and spirit.

My Reiki experiences

My first experience with Reiki was a bit scary. I had no idea what to expect, and I did get panicky at first. However, Kevin D. Hands - an incredibly talented, Reiki Master, took the time to tell me about Reiki, answered all of my questions, and what he would be doing. That really helped!

Just like we are all different, everyone’s experience with Reiki is different. Some may feel a warmth, coldness, see colors, or feel nothing at all. No matter what one’s experience is, accept it. The effects from Reiki can last for days, weeks, months and beyond.

I had my eyes closed and I was seeing colors like a kaleidoscope behind my eyes. It started at my head and it was gray, then the colors became more vivid and as the session was closing I saw the gray again.

After the session Kevin and I talked about my experiences, and next steps. I continued seeing Kevin for what I called, ‘tune-ups’ until we he moved to a different location and I moved further away. We are still in contact today!

Where we live now, I did a search for Reiki in my area, and there was a woman who did Reiki sessions about 20 minutes from where I live. Ann James is also an incredible Reiki Master! She too is patient and answered all of my questions. My experience with Ann was slightly different. I didn’t see as many colors, I saw something that looked like the “Eye of Sauron’ from the Lord of the Rings, and it kept popping up in my head. I told Ann about it and I learned there is a stone, a Tiger’s Stone that looks much like the Eye of Sauron.

I was so interested in learning more about Reiki from both Kevin’s and Ann’s sessions, that I decided to take the Reiki Level 1 Practitioner training. My classmate and I LOVED the class so much we wanted to take the next one, and kept on going until I reached the Master Level. It is incredibly exciting to try something new!
